View(s):The year 2013, marks a milestone in the history of Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy as the School prepares to celebrate, its 125th
Jubilee Year in 2014. As a premier school blessed in numerous ways, it is with confidence that they say, that all those who pass through its portals will be great women of faith, fortitude and self-sacrifice, equipped to face the realities of modern day life and to be a guiding light to others.
“Mount Leo” with its hilly terrain and wooded slopes was the site selected for the convent of the Good Shepherd in Kandy. The property was 10 acres in extent with a bungalow which in the days of the stage coach served as a hostelry for weary travelers from Colombo. With the advent of Good Shepherd nuns, Sister Mary of St. Magdalence de Pazzi Walsh and Sister Mary of St. Constance, both from Ireland in 1888, the parlour of the bungalow was transformed into the chapel and the stables were converted into a large hall to be used as a school room.
A spacious and pleasant surrounding is provided as an ideal environment for girls to pursue their studies in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. A unique feature is the precedence given to moral and spiritual development, infusing time honoured traditional values of love, equality, brotherhood, strength and sweetness which continue to remain the distinguishing characteristics of all Shepherdians.
The school colours are blue and white like the mantle that adorns the Blessed Virgin Mary. The school crest is at the centre, an emblem of pride and privilege. The school flag that has gathered generation of students transcending barriers of race religion class and language is hoisted at all major functions. They stand tall and straight under the banner of the Good Shepherd.
The school’s mission statement is based on these values. The vision is to produce Good Shepherdesses to the world In order to make their vision a reality. They commit themselves as a team, to inculcate the values of the Good Shepherd in their students.
With a student population of 1737 a tutorial staff of 106 the school continues to open the way to promote the integral perfecting of the human person. The human spirit must be cultivated in such a way that a child grows to maturity in her understanding, judgment and evaluation of life and events. Life is not merely a winning of laurels but something greater and nobler. Bearing these lofty ideals in mind the
school strives to inculcate learning in its manifold forms to their students who have been entrusted to them.
Since the year 2011, The Principal, Rev. Sr. Mary Gertrude, carries on the mission of the School, with commitment and dedication. She is responsible for many innovations in the school, where the Science laboratories, Computer laboratories, Home Science Section, School Library and the School Office have been up graded and better facilities have been made available for the betterment of the students. She continues to serve with a strong conviction and fidelity.
“A teacher effects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops”. The competition for grades and the struggle for recognition in athletics among students grow unabated. In this context, the teacher’s role is imperative.
Grace and peace abound in an atmosphere where religious activities are given priority. A spiritual atmosphere is maintained throughout the day; consequently students experience God’s unconditional love and grow in truth and moral up righteousness.
Many religious programmes are conducted during the Lenten and Christmas seasons, enabling students to prepare themselves to foster deep Christian faith.
Literary and cultural activities form an integral part of the extracurricular activities which are essential to the total development of students. They are nurtured in acquiring various skills, while at the same time bringing out their hidden talents. They are lead to accept the possibility of structuring their personality, have a broader vision of life and experience aesthetic sensitivity and fulfillment.
There are many clubs and associations which enhance the total development of the students. The School Prefect’s Body consists of 46 committee members in the collegiate school and 24 in the Primary section.
Sports and Athletics are vital for the healthy development of the body and mind of the students. The school continues to make provision for different games so that students have the opportunity to further their skills.
The renovated St. Patrick Stadium was declared open on School day February 8,, 2013 by the Vicar General and Manager of Catholic schools Rev. Fr. Milroy Fonseka. This was followed by the declaration of the 125th Jubilee year.
As Good Shepherd prepares for the celebration of the Jubilee Year, it is a good time to reflect on what they are today, due to the values of their faith which inspired all those who were the leaders of the school. According to the words of their great founder, St. Mary Euphrasia, “I belong to every country where there is a flock to be tended, our mission should not satisfy our zeal”.
The theme for the 125th Jubilee year is “My Heart is Glad and my tongue rejoices” (Psalm 16:9).
The theme and symbol reflects the discovery of purpose, meaning and relevance a deepening of their own worth as children of the Good Shepherd. Drawing confidence and assurance in God’s is the symphony of the Universe
