Sri Lankan Students Networking at Australia’s Number 1 University

View(s):

In 2013, there are approximately two hundred Sri Lankan students enrolled at Australia’s Number 1, University – The University of Melbourne. In August, the annual lunch and meeting of Sri Lankan students was held on campus at Melbourne with a gathering of fifty current students.

During the event, current Sri Lankan students from across the University in different disciplines and year levels came together to meet each other, network, and enjoy some food as a group. There were students who had only recently arrived in Melbourne for Semester 2 entering their first year Bachelor degree, all the way through to students who are about to complete their PhD program.

The event started with a quick ‘get to know you’ activity providing students the opportunity to meet each other and ask each other questions in order to win a prize. The University of Melbourne’s Regional Manager for Sri Lanka, Ms Stephanie Mollica, then gave a brief talk about her upcoming visit to Colombo and Kandy (September 2013) and then a lucky student was drawn for the door prize! Students provided great feedback regarding the event saying that it was ‘fantastic to be able to meet other Sri Lankan students’ and that it is a great opportunity to ‘relax and chat with fellow students about what they are studying’.

The current students mentioned how proud they were to be attending one of the world’s finest institutions and felt that their study at a top University would not only help them in their future careers, but would also ‘help me to make a difference in my own country, and in the world’.

The University of Melbourne has recently been ranked number 1 in Australia and number 54 in the world according to the very prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2013. The ARWU is collated by the Centre for World Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. It ranks the top 500 higher education institutions according to a range of criteria, including: staff and alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; highly cited researchers; articles published in Nature and Science and science citation indices; and academic performance in relation to the number of academic staff.
The University of Melbourne will be hosting an Information Evening for future students and parents on Friday 13 September from 6.00pm at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Come and talk to staff about why Melbourne is Australia’s number 1 university. Please contact e.stoltz@unimelb.edu.au to register. An event for parents of current students and Alumni of the University will follow at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be served all evening.
