Uthum Fernando a young lad of 19 years is from Negombo. He is the elder of two boys from a average family with 2 children – both sons. The parents of Uthum realising that his elder son is destined to do well in his studies, admitted him to Adventist International School from where he passed the GCE O/L with 2 A passes, 3 B passes and 2 C passes. These were not the best results that were expected by Uthum or his parents and sure they were disappointed. The family had a discussion and the parents told him that

whatever personal hardships they have to undergo they are willing to spend money if he is able to perform to his full capabilities at GCE A/L. They were willing to enrol him in Gateway College in Negombo for his A/L spending a sizeable sum of money which they barely could afford.

This was the turning point in Uthum’s life. He knew that underperforming at A/L will be the worst outcome and he was determined to do well. The end result was that Uthum passed GC E London A/L with 2 A* and 2 A grades offering Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry as the four subjects. He studied hard but was never a “book worm”. Whilst preparing for the A/L exam he continued with his athletics and represented school at Foot Ball too. He not only won the Javelin throw at the 2012/2013 International Athletic Championship meet but holds the record for that event.

It is with these results that he met counsellors at Edlocate together with his parents. Career counselling him was not too hard as he was determined to be an Engineer – An Electrical Engineer at that. It was then the case of where he would wish to study. He could have enrolled in any university of his choice but he had concerns not to subject his parents into great financial burdens. The counsellors worked hard to promote him for a scholarship and the efforts paid off when an opportunity arose for him to meet the University representative from Wollongong University to whom Edlocate has proposed to consider him for a scholarship. The one to one interview enabled both parties to gauge each other. The representative asked many questions and was impressed with Uthums answers and she knew that he could bring credit to the university if he is offered a scholarship. Uthum was impressed by her line of questioning and answers he got from her for his questions about the university and the school of Engineering which gave him the confidence that Wollongong should be his choice to study. On her return and report to the university they offered a 50% tuition scholarship to follow the 4 years Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) specialising in Electrical Engineering and Uthum left Sri Lanka on 15th July.

It is a fascinating story and we at Edlocate whilst wishing him well in his future endeavours will provide him all assistance during his period of studies in Australia through our international office. Uthums ability to obtain the scholarship was due to his regular counselling sessions at Edlocate and meeting the University representative on her visit. These meeting we arrange for prospective students are so valuable as students can impress the representatives with their capabilities. Edlocate will have in place such interviews with visiting university representatives both in their Colombo office (0115219129) and Kandy office (0815631583) from 31st August to 12th of September. Contact the counsellors and obtain details and book your interview slots on a firm basis.
