After four days of intense competition, Saseema Rajapaksha of Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha and Waruna Attanayake of Lyceum International School Wattala were adjudged the best athletes of the meet.
A total of over 5000 athletes from 412 schools flocked to Diyagama, Homagama with the intention of claiming fame, joy and honour at the annual junior athletics meet which took place from August 5 to 8.
Events were held for the age categories of Under-12, 13, 14 and 15 in the boy’s and girls’ segments. As per the regulations introduced by the Ministries of Education and Sports, the SLSAA did not conduct events for the age groups of Under-12 and 13 at a competitive level. But the officials introduced qualifying standards for those age categories for both the boys and girls. The top finishers who achieved the standard level received merit certificates. The meet included a total of 63 events, with a total of 107 rounds inclusive of 40 finals scheduled overall.
Ritzbury has been continuously supporting Sri Lanka’s sports and is the regular sponsor of the Junior National Squash Championship, Inter International Schools Soccer Tournament and the Inter International School and Mercantile Athletic Meet. Ritzbury will also sponsor the senior category of the John Tarbet event, in September at the Sugathadasa Stadium. – NA
