NIBM is the pioneer computer- education institute in Sri Lanka. The Management Information Systems(MIS) Division conducts computer training programmes to equip participants with skills required to obtain employment, and gain recognized qualifications. The division offers three diploma programmes, a higher diploma and several certificate programmes. The NIBM introduced its first Diploma in Computer System Design (DCSD) programme in 1979. It is a one year full times course and is offered three time a year. The DCSD is designed for those who wish to become computer professionals. It is the first year of the BSc in MIS offered in collaboration with University College Dublin of the National University of Ireland.
The Certificate Course in Computer Science is the preliminary course which provides the basic knowledge in Computer Science and helps students decide whether to pursue higher studies in Computer Science. In addition the division also conducts the Certificate Course in Web Application Development, Certificate Course in Computer Programming, Certificate Course in Personal Computer Based Application Packages, Certificate Course in Visual Basic.NET Programming for Database Applications, Certificate Course in Computer Hardware, Certificate Course in Computer Networking & Administration and the Certificate Course in Software Development in Java.
NIBM has provided training in the fields of Information Technology, Business Management and Productivity Facilitations over the last 44 years. Training courses, which are based on industrial standards, are backed by a team of dedicated and qualified staff. The NIBM certificate is well recognized in both public and private sectors.
The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) was founded in 1968 as a statutory body under the purview of the Ministry of Industries and Scientific Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Labour Organization (ILO) functioning as the Executive Agency. Presently NIBM is under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development.
