Competition and Recognition, Godfather of Invention
View(s):The Higher Education Ministry will conduct a competition called SIIIP (Solutions, Ideas, Innovations, Inventions and Products) among university students and students in advanced technological institutes to showcase their innovative and creative talents and gain recognition.
The objective of the Higher Education Ministry is to create a platform to empower research innovations in Sri Lanka and assist in its commercialisation through this programme, the Ministry said.
The Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC) annually conducts ‘Sahasak Nimewum’, a National Exhibition of Inventions, where SIIIP aims to enhance the participation of the Higher Education Sector. The exhibition will be held from November 30 to December 2 at the BMICH Sirimavo Bandaranayaike Memorial Exhibition Center’s Auditorium and at ‘Mihilaka Medura’, the Ministry added.
SIIIP is open to all students registered with any recognized higher education institute, such as all universities, advanced technological institutes, vocational training and technical institutes and research institutes.
The competition is organised in the undermentioned categories and each category will be judged for the best product in each of the five verticals of ICT, Traditional Knowledge, Electronics, Nano Technology and Import Substitution.
Categories: Making Disabled Independent, Environment, Food, Agriculture, Health, Nutrition, Energy, Construction, Teaching Aids, Safety, Garments and Accessories, Entertainment, Communication, Business Management, Public and Service Management and any other.
Best Innovation of each category in each vertical would be given an award and a cash prize by the Higher Education Ministry. The Ministry also plans to provide further training and guidance for commercialisation of the selected products.
All the students will also be competing for the ‘Sahasak Nimawum’ competition where they will receive awards for each category and will also be entitled to compete for the overall Best Innovation award – “Dasis Award”.
The Higher Education Ministry will conduct training programmes for potential mentors. Mentors of winning teams will also be given due recognition at the awards ceremony.
The Higher Education Ministry will also telecast a TV series to help these young inventors to demonstrate their talents and find potential investors to commercialise their innovations.
