Indian contractor has successful trial run of rail track to Kilinochchi
View(s):A trial run was recently conducted on the completed new railway track between Omanthai and Kilinochchi covering a distance of 63 km
by Indian contractor, Ircon International Ltd, personally overseen by company Chairman and Managing Director Mohan Tiwari and other Sri Lankan and Indian officials.
The trial run began from Omanthai station and ended at the newly constructed Kilinochchi Station. “The officials who went on the trial run said it was successful with comfortable riding quality. The train took 40 minutes to complete 63 of km of track from Omanthai to Kilinochchi with a maximum speed of 115 kmph, for the first time in Sri Lanka,” a media statement from Ircon said.
The reconstructed track is a 63-km long segment in the Northern Railway Line project of 252 km route length, which is being executed by Ircon under and Indian Government funded-project. The track segment between Omanthai and Kilinochchi would be opened by the President in mid-September at a function at Kilinochchi.
