A Portuguese fleet of ships sailed passing Batticaloa. Admiral De Vaart captured them but he promised not to cause harm to any lives. Manuel Dias got to know about this.
Before the king could come to meet the Dutch Admiral, Manuel Dias came, met the admiral and had discussions. He managed to set free the Portuguese sailors. The king was met only after that.
Admiral De Vaart marched to Kandy, accompanied by his army. The king welcomed them warmly. A dinner party was also arranged. After partaking of liquor at the dinner, the Admiral was somewhat intoxicated and began to utter unnecessary words. The king had been entertaining a little anger against the admiral for setting the Portuguese free.
Now the king began to suspect the Admiral because of his unwanted words and unwelcome behavior. The king’s anger was roused and he ordered to Admiral to be imprisoned immediately. On this occasion, the king’s officers got involved in a fight with the Dutch forces.
As a result of this fight, 50 Dutch soldiers, including De Vaart, were killed. The officer who succeeded De Vaart, was informed by the Nilames, that the king had no involvement in these killings and he was anxiously waiting to hold discussions.
