Rutnam was in South Africa to promote the film and to also promote Sri Lanka as a great filmmaking destination. He is also looking to collaborate with the South African film industry.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Shehan Ratnavale in South Africa introduced Rutnam as a great Sri Lankan director who Steven Spielberg once referred to as “Our most valued friend in the Far East.” Rutnam started his movie career with Britain’s David Lean in the Oscar-winning film ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ at the age of 16 and studied with American director George Lucas in film school.

Rutnam brought numerous Hollywood movies to Sri Lanka and he worked as the production supervisor in Sri Lanka for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) amongst many other Hollywood movies. Speaking on ‘A Common Man’ Rutnam said that the film is totally fiction and that Sri Lanka, having attained peace, is a great destination for tourism, business and filmmaking. Rutnam said that he liked the concept of the movie “A Wednesday” and he adapted this Hindi movie into a highly suspenseful thriller.

‘A Common Man’ is a psychological thriller starring Oscar Award winner Ben Kingsley and Ben Cross and it won three awards at the Madrid International Film Festival for ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actor’ (Ben Kingsley). The Madrid International Film Festival is an annual event held to promote cinematographic art by presenting films of quality and entertainment and is based in the city of Madrid in Spain.
