Over 9000 students of the age limit of Under-15, from 600 schools islandwide will vie for the Samaposha U-15 Inter-School Football Championship 2013, which is considered as one of the crucial competitions to be held in Sri Lanka.

The competition which kicked off yesterday, with the preliminary rounds, will be conducted at 30 centres around the country before it reaches the final stage a month later.

A total of 600 teams, 480 boys and 120 girls, will be in action at the tournament which is conducted jointly by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) and Sri Lanka Schools Football Association (SLSFA). This is one of the junior level tournaments in Sri Lanka to hit the spotlight among the public and the media due to the involvement of FFSL.

The conductors of the competition revealed that it has reached the once most affected regions such as Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu as it keeps on expanding in numbers and value each year. After the completion of the first round, the best 21 teams will compete in the final rounds which will be held on October 11, 12 and 13.

“The Under-15 Inter-School tournament, is a friendly, yet competitive event organised to identify budding football stars.

This tournament gives us the opportunity to support young enthusiastic athletes to compete at their highest potential. It’s essential that sports events, especially those conducted to encouraged the young ones, are keenly followed and fostered by the corporate sector. In that aspect we are grateful to Plenty Foods, for giving thousands of school children around the island the opportunity to exhibit their talents,” Rahula Siriwardena, the Acting Secretary General of FFSL said.

Accordingly, Samaposha the cereal brand of Plenty Foods will sponsor the competition for the fifth year running.

“With the aim of advocating and promoting fitness through nutrition among our future generation, we are pleased to sponsor the Under-15 Inter-School football championship for the fifth consecutive year.

We look forward to contribute for many more football tournaments in the coming years as a part of our efforts to perk up nutrition standards among school children,” pointed out Shammi Karunaratne, Director/CEO of Plenty Foods.

The tournament will offer trophies, awards and certificates for the talented footballers and winners. In addition awards will be presented to the best goalkeeper and most valuable player from boys’ and girls’ categories based on the performances of the entire tournament.

Zahira College Colombo are the defending champions in the boys category while Maliyadeva Girls’ School Kurunegala won the girls’ category last year. – NA
