Schools, teachers used for election related work: Polls’ Monitors

Several instances where school teachers and schools have been used for election related work was reported ahead of yesterday’s provincial elections, election monitors said..

The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) pointed out that use of school property and officials violates election laws.
The Network for Election Monitoring and Intellectuals for Human Rights (NEM IHR) in a statement said that they received information of several teachers in schools including Theldeniya National School, Amupitiya Maha Vidyalaya (MV), Waradiwela MV and Dunhinna MV of the Central Province, had reported for work, but gone for propaganda work of UPFA candidates on September 12 and 13.

Also, in a separate incident, it was reported that UNP candidates were planning to use Ridee Vihara MV, in the Kurunegala district, to hold a meeting. It was reported that teachers and parents of students were requested to participate at the meeting.

“It is illegal to use government officials for election related work during their work hours, and following investigations, action will be taken against the concerned groups,” the NEM IHR said.
