It was as if Royal College were playing a home and home match at Mount Lavinia recently when they sent the Thomians to the cleaners with a 55 to 13 points drubbing in their senior basketball fixture to retain the D.S. Senanayake Memorial Shield recently. At half time the Royalists had the Thomians well and truly stitched up with 30 points, while the Thomians had yet to get off the mark.

The game had hardly got underway when Royal opened scoring. From there it was virtually a one sided game as the Royalists ran circles round the Thomians to pile up baskets while their opponents were drifting in an uncharted sea. While Royal piled up baskets as when they wished, the Thomians were reduced to mere spectators. Time and time again the Thomians missed shooting from underneath the basket.

After the change of ends, Royal continued to drive the nails further into the Mount Lavinia boys coffin, and with the Royal score on 42, a roar went up from the Thomian supporters to indicate that they had at long last cracked their ‘duck.’ When the finalwhistle was blown, Royal had 55 points piled up while S. Thomas’ had only a paltry 13 to show for their effort.

For the Royalists, shooting guard Sameera Chanaka led the way with 18 points, while forward, Ashen Menuka 11 and captain and point guard Sandeep Ratnayake 8 helped to swell the score.

Of the 13 points scored by the Thomians, four were by Ashan Goonasinghe, the small forward.

S. Thomas’ win junior game.

Earlier S. Thomas’ won the junior game when they defeated Royal by 55 points to 34 to win the Janaka De Fonseka Memorial trophy.
For the Thomians the best shooters were Adrian Gunasinghe with 19 points, Malishan Serasinghe 10 and Tharusha Allewala 11.
For Royal College, Tharindu Balasuriya 12 and Visal Pinto 9 played best. – BM
