Celebrating 56 years – The Overseas School of Colombo unveils a new vision & mission
View(s):Established on 23rd September 1957, Overseas Children’s School, as it was then known, commenced with just 9 students, to provide an international education to Diplomats and expats children. The first ever international school in Sri Lanka, it was located in Queens Road, Coninston Place, Mutthiah Road and finally in 1983 was set up in Pelawatte, Battaramulla . Set amidst a lush 5 acre campus, The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC)provides excellent facilities for its student and staff.
Offering another first, OSC introduced the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in 1982 and continues to be the only fully authorized IB World School in Sri Lanka offering the International Baccalaureate in Primary, Middle Years & Diploma Programmes. We are also accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and Middle States Association of Schools & Colleges (MSA), and are members of Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA)and South Asia Inter-School Association (SAISA)
OSC has grown steadily over the years, changing and adapting, we’ve seen thousands of students & teachers going through our School. We have experienced many proud moments, initiating the Colombo Model United Nations (Co-MUN), growth of community service 
projects, international sports tournaments, school productions and many more achievements.
The Overseas School of Colombo offers a holistic learning experience for our diverse student body of 400+ students across 45 different nationalities. Our highly qualified faculty mirrors this diversity of nationalities and we celebrate this diversity of 
cultures and nationalities amongst our Board of Directors, PTA and in all activities of the school.
In keeping with OSC’s aims to foster internationalism, and focus on the future growth of the school, in the 2012-2013 school year, the Board appointed a committee comprising teachers, administrators and students to draft a vision to guide our school, a mission to focus our endeavours and support our motto , “Unity in Diversity”.
As mentioned by Ms. Sajeda Akbarally, Chairman of the Board at the celebration of the Founders Day Assembly on 27th September 2013, “The vision represents an ideal state of the school at a point in the distant
future, a status the school is striving to achieve. It tells everyone what direction the school plans to take and what it aspires to be. Today we are officially launching our new vision to the community at large.
VISION- The Overseas School of Colombo shall be a model of excellence in education, nurturing and empowering our community of learners to achieve global success.
In forming this vision the committee also needed to look at the other two guiding statements. The motto remains the same “Unity in Diversity” representing the essence of our school.
Our mission was modified to bring it in line with the vision, and speaks of the school’s purpose, its reason for existing.
MISSION – The Overseas School of Colombo, an IB World School, is committed to 
guiding our global community toward international and intercultural understanding. OSC develops the whole person as a responsible learner, striving for excellence within a culturally diverse environment.”
OSC incorporates learning in all aspects of our activities, as witnessed at the Founders Day assembly, we encourage and develop individual opinions and creativity amongst our students, we provide opportunity for students to be pro-active and compassionate by providing a platform in community service activities and nurturing their individual projects and we prepare them for the risks and challenges of a global, technological and evolving world.
