Wariyapola Sri Sumangala geared to face future challenges confidently
Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College is a premier boy’s college situated in the historical city of Kandy.

The school has a long history of 133 years. It was initiated in 1879 at the premises of St. Paul’s Church, close to the Temple of the Tooth Relic under the name of St. Pauls’, as the junior school of Trinity College, Kandy.
The school achieved a lot of success with Mr. R.M.D.Rathnayake who was appointed as the principal on May 15, 1987.
In the beginning of the 1990’s, the school was moved to Asgiriya and was re-opened by the then President of Sri Lanka Ranasinghe Premadasa on March 2, 1991 as Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College in memory of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thera who fought for freedom during the island’s imperialistic period. The school is a 1AB school with 109 teachers facilitating a sound and a healthy environment for 2560 students who are keen to do well.
The present Principal Mr. N.B.G. Muhandiram who assumed duties in early 2013 is leading the school in its vision: ‘Mould our students to face the challenges effectively to become perfect individuals to suit the global society’. His guidance is leading the institution effectively in the academic, co-curricular, extracurricular as well as infrastructure fields.
This year (2013) Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College has organised many events to enhance the skills of the students. An alms giving was held to 60 Monks of the Asgiriya Pirivenna. The annual Blood Donation campaign was organised by the Science section to commemorate the school Founder’s Day. Both the Primary and the Commerce sections organised Sinhala Tamil New Year celebrations and the primary and the secondary students participated at the annual sports meet with a lot of enthusiasm. Most of the students have shown their talents in sports in a big way.

The aesthetic and the sport sections are very active in the school. They have brought several successes to the school at District, Provincial and National level competitions.
Almost every year, the dancing troupe of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College has achieved success at National level dancing competitions under the guidance of Mrs. Y.M. Wijethunga. This year (2013) both Traditional and the Folk Dance troupes were selected for the All Island Dancing Competition which will be held at the end of the year. Music is also given priority in the field of aesthetics at Sumangala. First place was achieved in this section in the Tabela Solo competition, 2012.
Soccer, hockey, cricket and wrestling has given an identity to Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College in the field of sports. The Under 17 soccer team won the District and Provincial championships and achieved fourth place at the All Island Soccer tournament this year. Anjana Karunarathna was fortunate to be selected to the Under 18 Central Province soccer pool.

The Under 15 Hockey team was the second runners-up at the 2013 All Island Hockey Tournament, under the guidance of Mr. Sumith Dissanayake
Ahamad Muhas who represented the College First Eleven cricket team, created a record by scoring centuries in both innings in a game at the 2013 tournament. This achievement was earlier performed by a player only in 1979. Chamara Athapattu who represents the First Eleven cricket team, set a record by claiming a hat- trick against Hindu College Matale.
The school bagged two third places at the All Island Wrestling meet held in September this year.
Annually the college athletes, badminton players, cadet corps, the Eighth Kandy Scouts, St John’s Ambulance Brigade have also have brought glory by securing places at District, Provincial and National level.
Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College has been enrolled in the Dreams Teams and the Connecting Classrooms programme conducted by the British Council since 2010. Since then, collaborative projects are being carried out with the Rosebury Sports and Community

School and Wellingdon Community School in UK. Mrs. Anoja N.K. Goonetilleke is the ambassador for the British Council School and the ISA coordinator of this programme.
Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College received the International School Award and was classed amongst the Top 10 in 2012 and is seeking to retain it under the Connecting Classrooms programme in 2015 as well.
The school’s 100 Words Drama team was first in the 100 Words Drama Competition conducted by the British Council London. Five students and the ISA coordinator had the chance to participate at the 2012 Southbank Alchemy Festival in London.
The dedication and the devotion of the principal, the school management committee, the Buddhist priests, past principals and teachers, the present tutorial staff, past and present students, minor staff and well-wishers has brought this institution to its present status. Their blessings have strengthened the future of these eminent Sumangala boys, to face future challenges with confidence.
