Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems are to be installed in four more district cities to detect crime and traffic offences, Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon said yesterday. He said plans were being made to instal the CCTV system in Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Kandy and Galle early next year.

Police and Moratuwa University technology experts had visited the cities to identity places to instal CCTV cameras, he said.
The IGP said that in many countries the CCTV system was a large network, covering almost the whole country to detect crimes in streets and traffic law violations.

At present there are CCTV cameras only in Colombo.  The IGP said that by later next year, almost all the main cities in the country would be covered by CCTV systems. The main operation centre would be set up in Colombo to analyse and footage from all cities.

The Police Chief said he hoped the new CCTV system would improve city to an extent that women and foreigners would be able to travel safely even in the night.
