Judge says sexual bribes corrupting society
A management assistant attached to the Medical Superintendent’s office in Wellawaya was sentenced this week to 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for demanding a sexual bribe from a female minor employee to approve a transfer.
Colombo High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam delivering the verdict said offering and accepting sexual bribes have resulted in the society being thoroughly corrupted.
Lekamge Ariyapala (63) from Kithulgasyaya had told the employee that if she wanted the transfer approved she would have to meet him at a guest house. The suspect was arrested in the room as he was attempting to obtain the sexual bribe, but in a statement made in open courts the accused claimed that he had called the minor employee to ‘discuss an official issue’ and he was arrested in a corridor of the guest house.
The accused who was fined Rs. 20,000 was told that if he failed to pay the fine his prison sentence would be extended to another four years. The Bribery or Corruption Commission had filed action in the case. Attorney at law Rasika Abeywardana appeared for the accused. .
