Hungarian Parliament Speaker Laszlo Kover in recognition of Rohan Nanayakkara’s 20 year service as the country’s Consul in Sri Lanka held a reception in the Hungarian parliament on September 13. Several dignitaries and religious leaders were invited to the reception in what was seen as a rare honour bestowed on a Sri Lankan representing a foreign country as its diplomat in Sri Lanka.

Hungary was one of the first countries which came to Sri Lanka’s rescue during the tsunami catastrophe in 2004.  At the reception Mr. Nanayakkara presented plaques to Hungarian organisations, local authorities, and the Government of Hungary in appreciation of their support during the tsunami. The event was telecast live over the Hungarian TV and published in Hungarian newspapers.

Mr. Nanayakkara is the chairman of R- Group International which includes Lanka Air, Lanka Cargo, Ceylon Carriers and Ronan Centre. Rohan Nanayakkara is the elder son of the late Charles Nanayakkara, the founder of the Ceylon Carriers established in 1945.
