Brandix to launch innovation ‘incubator’
View(s):Sri Lanka-based apparel manufacturer Brandix plans to launch a ‘incubator’ in the near future, to facilitate and foster innovation,
according to company director Udena Wickremesooriya.
Mr. Wickremesooriya’s statement was made during the closing ceremony of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) organised Robofest 2013, where he was the Chief Guest, and his company was the main sponsor. The event saw the crowning of Mahinda College Galle in the ‘school’ category and SLIIT in the ‘university categories’, with New Techno Lank Engineers (Pvt) Ltd being awarded the single prize in the ‘open’ category.
According to a statement; “More than 60 robotic applications competed in the university category, while schools submitted over 100 applications at this annual robotic competition organised by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of SLIIT… In the university segment, SLIIT took first and third places, while ICBT Kandy was placed second. In the school segment, St. Thomas’ College Matara came second and St. Mary’s College Kegalle third”.
It also added; “Robofest is conducted annually by SLIIT primarily to promote the application of problem solving skills and skills honed from modules taught in undergraduate studies, such as Embedded Systems Design, Embedded Systems Engineering and Microprocessor based Systems, Digital and Analog Electronics, Control Systems, Robotics and Software Engineering, as well as any
type of knowledge acquired by the other competition participants. It is also an opportunity for the industry to demonstrate locally-developed technologies that might represent an innovative idea worth demonstrating… Competitors are required to build a Robot that can perform a given task according to a given criteria, and the winners of the competition are awarded valuable prizes and certificates”.
Further noted; “Brandix came forward to sponsor the Sri Lankan Robotics Challenge organised by the E-Club of the University of Moratuwa last December. Subsequently, two teams representing Sri Lanka emerged winners and second runner-up at the International Robotics Challenge 2013 held in Mumbai, India in January 2013. Brandix was also the sole sponsor of the University of Peradeniya Faculty of Engineering team that represented Sri Lanka at the 2013 ROBOCON International Robot Competition conducted by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Danang, Vietnam, in August this year. The team achieved the best standing by a Sri Lankan team at this competition to date”.
