Celebrating 64 proud years of teaching and guiding young talent, the Cora Abraham Art Classes has the work of all their students in their respective age groups on show at their annual exhibition today, Sunday October 6 at their own premises at No.26, Boteju Road, (off Thimbirigasyaya Road), Colombo 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Every child has a story to tell: Student artwork on display

Around 250 students, from ages 3 to 15, are taking part in the exhibition this year. Principal of the Cora Abraham Art Classes, Mrs. Nirmala Riza told the Sunday Times, “We appreciate every single scribble done by the kids because every child has a story to tell. I remember once a child had drawn a beautiful Submarine on paper. But the next time I came around the picture was covered in blue paint. I felt a little sad at the idea that the beautiful picture was ruined but the child was so delighted and said that the submarine is now underwater.”

Students at Cora Abraham Art Classes enjoy a happy time sketching and colouring with varied media that is available such as clay, wire, thread, papier mache, fabric collage compositions and glass. Upholding the notion that every picture is worthwhile there will be no judging and selection of winners.

Established as the Melbourne Art Classes (on Melbourne Avenue, Colombo 4) by the late Olive Cora Abraham, a pioneer teacher of education through art since its inception, the school was committed to helping children explore and navigate different forms of art through constant encouragement and guidance.

After the demise of Ms. Abraham the name of the school was changed to its present name in honour of its founder principal. Sustaining the quality and vision Ms. Abraham established, the task of nurturing young minds is now carried out by Mrs. Nirmala Riza and her team of dedicated teachers.
