‘Girikula’ the journey begins
View(s):Award winning teledrama director Sudath Roahana who is well-known for his artistic tele-productions released his newest direction ‘Girikula’, teledrama based on the award winning novel written by Shanthi Dissanayake under the same title. The teledrama will be telecast every Sunday at 8.30 pm on Swarnavahini channel starting from today, October 13.
Produced by Faheem Mawjude, “Girikulka’ is played by an experienced cast including Kanchana Mendis, Janak Premalal, Nilmini Tennakone, Sriyani Amerasena, Priyankara Ratnayake, Sanath Wimalasiri, Nihal Fernando, Susantha Chandramali, W. Jayasiri, Prasannajith Abeysuirya, Priya Ranasinghe, Gangu Roshana, Lal Kularatne, Gamini Hettiarachchi, Gayana Sudarshani, Priyantha Sirikumara, Saranapala Jayasuriya, Prasannajith Abeysuirya, T. B. Ekanayake, Kaushalya Samarasinghe, Madhshan Hathlahwatta and Saman Hemarathna.
A periodic play ‘Girikula’ which revolves around an agricultural colony discusses the social, political and economical changes that took place in Sri Lanka from 1940s to early 1970s,. It highlights efforts of the first Prime Minister and the Father of the Nation, D. S. Senanayake’s efforts to introduced the agricultural colonies to provide lands to the landless poor.
The teledrama narrates around a family that migrates to an agricultural colony in Thambuththegama from North-Western province. Wasthuhamy, a father of five children goes to Senapura agricultural colony with many dreams to fulfill. But all his dreams shatters when his eldest son Sudu Banda starts an affair with Muthumenika. She gets pregnant despite the objection for the affair. Sudu Banda starts a new life with her.
However while Muthumenika is expecting, Wasthuhamy’s wife also gets pregnant. Embarrassed by the notion that getting pregnant when there are grown up children, Wasthuhamy dies while she tries to abort th child. All efforts by Wasthuhamy to protect the family without a mother fails and he has to face more miseries and tragedies in his life.
