Arthur C Clark Institute organises discussion on ‘Space Technology Applications for National Development’
View(s):Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT), in a bid to educate CEOs on the enormous potential that space technology offers, is organising a one-day CEOs’ forum on the applications of space technology towards national development on October 21 at the Galadari Hotel.
The CEO’s forum aims to create awareness about space technologies whilst allowing for the possibility of collaboration between public sector agencies who are either already using these applications, or are planning to do so in the future, the institute said.
Minister of Technology and Research, Patali Champika Ranawaka will address the forum along with the Chief of the Space Applications Section from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Bangkok Dr. Wang Keran; Dr. Michio Ito, Disaster Rick Reduction Expert in the Space Application Sector of UNESCAP; Deputy Director of the National Remote Sensing Centre in India, Dr. P. G. Diwakar, and several local experts.
Space-related technologies are not being adequately utilised in the public sector, particularly Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).
Satellite Remote Sensing allows the user to acquire information of the earth, such as topography, vegetation cover, meteorological information, soil moisture and surface temperature, while GIS allows for the management, analysis and presentation of all kinds of geographical data. GNSS refers to a satellite navigation system with global coverage.
“These technologies can be applied in a wide variety of fields- from agriculture, transport and navigation to environmental protection, resource mapping, meteorology, disaster management and surveying,” the institute said.
