House debates ‘come alive’ on giant screen from Wednesday
Live proceedings of Parliamentary debates will be telecast from Wednesday over a giant screen installed opposite the Parliament grounds at Jayanthipura in Kotte. Among the first debates to be telecast will be the debate on new regulations under the Strategic Development Projects Act. The debate on the regulations that seek to give tax concessions to casinos will take place on Thursday and Friday.
In November and December; the Budget debate will be telecast over the giant screen. All parties in Parliament had agreed in principle that proceedings be telecast live, but financial constraints and lack of a clear policy delayed the move. The telecast on the wide screen is a prelude to live telecasts over television, Parliament officials said.
At present, live Parliamentary proceedings are shown in the Parliament complex and are uploaded as a webcast on the Parliament website, soon after the speeches conclude. Parliament officials have studied how proceedings are telecast live in the Indian Parliament and in Britain’s House of Commons.
In India, two separate satellite channels have been in operation since 2004 to telecast the entire proceedings of the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House) of Parliament.
