Amrith braves the weather and wins the course
Amrith de Soysa displayed one of his strong points under tough weather conditions to clinch the main title of 75th Etisalat Nuwara Eliya Golf Club Championship 2013 at the Golf Course in Nuwara Eliya yesterday. While de Soysa recorded a
comfortable unchallenged win in the Men’s category, Dhanishi Senadhira overcame a close battle against Jane Hong to snatch the Women’s championship.
De Soysa who recorded 3 under par in the first round on Friday after the first day’s play was abandoned due to heavy showers. Yesterday he completed even par on 70 to complete with a total of 137 and finish 18 strokes ahead of runner-up Sachin de Silva, who was adjudged the Etisalat Elite Club winner. De Silva finished with a total of 155, braving the rains that poured down continuously after the competitors reached the ninth hole.
“The conditions got tough after rain began, but having finished 3 under par in the first round, I was comfortable in continuing with my efforts, which eventually earned me the third title in Nuwara Eliya in four years,” de Soysa who also won the title in Division ‘A’ for the nett score, said.
Overall second, de Silva also emerged the runner-up in that category behind de Soysa. Primal Wijenayake who scored 150 nett, emerged the Division ‘B’ champion for nett score ahead of L.T. Samarawickrama who recorded 152 nett. Naresh Ediriweera ended with 171 nett to win the Division ‘C’ title as Anura Balasuriya finished as runner-up with 179 nett.
The Master’s Championship for the age category of 55 to 64 was claimed by Anil Amarasuriya while the Seniors Championship for age category of 65 and over was won by Prasanna Goonatilleke, who finished way ahead of Tommy Wijesekara. Overall runner-up Sachin de Silva had his reasons to celebrate after winning the Longest Drive and Nearest to the Pin category titles.
In the Women’s category Senadhira recorded 262 overall to win the main title from Hong who recorded 268 overall. The Silver Division was won by Anusha Senadhira who finished with a nett score of 236 while Michele Mirchandani finished one point behind to claim the runner-up title. Anusha Senadhira went on to clinch the title on offer for the best nett score among Etisalat Club members as Mirchandani snatched the Longest Drive category title from the overall winner.
Shyama Perera recorded her career best by claiming the Bronze Division for the nett score. She recorded 228 nett, well ahead of Niranjali Amarasuriya who finished with 242 nett. The championship which was inaugurated in 1933 was conducted for the 75th occasion by the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club under the sponsorship of Etisalat.
