View(s):The 37th annual Mercantile Hockey Sevens will be played in five different divisions at the P. Sara Oval Stadium in Colombo today. A total of 21 teams will vie for honours in five divisions at the tournament which is sponsored by Brown and Company for the seventh consecutive year.
The Division ‘A’ segment played for the Dennis de Rosairo Trophy donated by Janashakthi Insurance will be battled by top contenders Commercial Bank ‘A’, Hatton National Bank ‘A’, Sampath Bank and Singer Sri Lanka. The runners-up of this division will walk away with the MHA Trophy. In addition the most disciplined team among the four from this division will receive the Dennis de Rosairo Fair Play Trophy donated by Idac.
In the Division ‘B’ for the Singer Trophy, HSBC, Hatton National Bank ‘B’, Commercial Bank ‘B’, Brown & Company and Airport & Aviation ‘A’ will compete. Unilevers, AIA Insurance, Arpico, Hayleys Group, Biveta and Separa will vie from Division ‘C’ for the Lifebuoy Trophy.
The Division ‘D’ will be battled among Nations Trust Bank, Airport & Aviation ‘B’, AWD and HDPL for the Edmund H. Cooray Trophy. In the Division ‘E’, Colombo Hilton, SmithKline Beecham and WSO2 will vie for the Ceylon Cold Stores Trophy.
The most outstanding players of the five divisions will be awarded hockey sticks by Mercantile Hockey Association, the organisers and conductors of the tournament. The Chief Guests for the event will be Chaminda Ediriwickrama, Director of Browns while Aruna Jayasekara, DGM/Human Resources of Sampath Bank will be the Guest of Honour. – NA
