University of Colombo to take on Malaysian waters
View(s):The oarsmen and oarswomen of University of Colombo will leave for Malaysia on Monday, 21st October to take part in the prestigious Boat Race organized by the Universiti Teknologi and the Ministry of Education of Malaysia. This will be the fourth year that University of Colombo will be rowing in the waters of Putrajaya, Malaysia
In their debut year in 2010, the women won the Coxless Fours to take gold and performed exceptionally well in the Indoor Rowing competition winning an individual gold and a team bronze. The same year, the men’s team entered into finals in both the Coxed Eights and Coxless Fours and rowed into 5th place out of 18 in the former and placed 6th out of 19 in the latter.
Yet again the team proved themselves last year when they returned with a bronze medal in the Men’s Double Scull and also managed to advance into the finals in most of the events they participated. Their admirable performance earned them a total of 34 points which secured them 5th place out of the 37 institutions that participated.
This year the team consists of ten men and nine women lead by Praveen Liyanage (Men’s Capt.) and Chandula Walgama (Women’s team Capt.) The crew has been training hard under the able guidance of Lloyd Sirimanne, who has been coaching the University team for more than 25 years. Accompanying him will be Senarath Alwis (Instructor, Physical Education, University of Colombo) and Yaso Indrani Sirimanne (Assistant Coach, Women’s Team). The team is determined to do better and outdo their previous year’s performance, training at both Colombo Rowing Club and Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club.
