The incidence of cancer in Sri Lanka has now reached the same level as heart attacks, according to statistics collected by Ceylinco Insurance, the holding company of Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd.

Ceylinco Healthcare Chairman R. Reganathan, told a media briefing this week to announce the opening of the first Tomo Therapy centre in Sri Lanka, that this newest technology offers one of the world’s most advanced and precise radiation techniques for the treatment of many forms of cancer. The installation cost of the equipment is around Rs 500 million and the treatment through technology would range from Rs. 200,000 to Rs 750,000.

He said that Sri Lankans hitherto were going abroad to get this cancer treatment at a great cost, but now they can obtain the same treatment at a much lesser cost which in turn also saves foreign exchange for the country.

TomoHD is the only machine of this kind available, Mr Renganathan said. He noted that this unit can provide more accurate radiation therapy for even the smallest tumors and reduce treatment time.

He said that as both a treatment delivery machine and a CT scanner, the Tomo Therapy system allows doctors to take a CT scan just before each treatment and with the scan they could verify the position of the tumour and, if necessary, adjust the patient’s position to make sure radiation is directed right where it should be.
