Maruti Suzuki to build a vehicle assembly unit
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is in discussions with the Sri Lankan government to build a vehicle assembly operation in Hambantota, officials said.
“The plant will likely be at Hambantota,” an official told the Business Times on the on the sidelines of a media conference on Thursday.
He said that the proceedings in this regard are still in the early stages and that they plan to set it up at either Mirijjawila Industrial Park or at Suriyawewa Investment Promotion Zone in Hambantota.
R.C. Bhargava, Maruti Chairman, told reporters that the company is doing a feasibility study on the facility and that at present the structure of the company – such as whether this unit will be a partnership with its local agent Associated Motorways (AMW) or not hasn’t still been decided.
He added that the feasibility study will be concluded before year-end and that the capacity will also be decided then.
“Teams from Maruti’s parts manufacturers were in Sri Lanka to do the feasibility on setting up the assembly plant,” he said.
“Some components do not require large volumes,” he said.
Samantha Rajapaksa, AMW Group Managing Director said 60,000 Maruti’s have been sold in Sri Lanka.
