Tesavalamai is a special system of law applicable to the Tamil inhabitants of the Northern Province. It evolved from a system of customary laws applicable to ancient Tamils, who had a matriarchal system of society. Among the customary laws of the Tamils of Ceylon, Tesavalamai takes pride of place as a living system of law.
This lecture discusses the applicability of the Tesavalamai, examining the meaning of the words ‘Malabar’, ‘Inhabitant’, ‘The Province of Jaffna’ and the contents of the Tsavalamai Code, as modified and amended by subsequent Legislation.
