Successful health campaign at Wijeya Newspapers

The two-day health campaign, “Theweni Asata Suwaya Sadamu” organised by the Welfare Society of Wijeya Newspapers Limited together with the Ministry of Health was successfully held on October 21 and 22 at the head office of Wijeya Newspapers at Hunupitiya Cross Road, Colombo 2.

As 2013 is dedicated to the prevention of non-communicable diseases, the Colombo Health Education Bureau coordinated this campaign free of charge. The staff of Wijeya Newspapers were tested and examined by the consultant Doctors and received treatment when needed. Long queues were seen as staff members availed themselves of this rare opportunity to get themselves checked by the team of doctors who were present on both days

A number of medical staff including specialists, doctors, nursing staff and medical assistants dedicated two full days to make the campaign worthwhile.

The Director General of Health Services, Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Director of the National Hospital, Colombo, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director of the National Eye Hospital Dr. Wilfred Kumarasinghe, Director of the Health Education Bureau, Dr. Neelamani Rajapaksa Hewageegana and the Resident Physician of the National Hospital Colombo, Dr. Pradeep Kumarasinghe were among those present at the inauguration of the campaign.

Dr. Uthpala Amarasinghe of the Health Education Bureau, Publicity Officer, Janaka Suneth Bandara and the Chief Nurse of the OPD of the National Hospital of Colombo, Kithsiri Mahasen Mulleriyawa extended their fullest support to make the campaign productive.

The Non-Communicable Diseases Division of the Health Ministry, the National Hospital, the National Eye Hospital, Dental Hospital, Cancer Combat Campaign, Mental Health Institute, Nutrition Coordination Division, Medical Laboratory Services, Prevention of Respiratory Diseases, ENT division and the National AIDS and STD Control programme all participated in this good cause.

All the facilities were readily provided by the Director of the National Hospital, Colombo, Dr. Anil Jasinghe to take the patients who were in need of immediate treatment to the National Hospital Colombo.
