The Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) Corps regained the Inter-Regimental Challenge Trophy at the annual Inter-Regimental Cycling Meet of Sri Lanka Army held at Saliyapura in Anuradhapura last weekend.

his team mates Rajapaksha, C.F.N. Perera and Gayan Kumara finished one after another to be placed from second to fourth respectively. Sisira Kumara of Armed Corps finished at fifth while K.D. Silva of Ceylon Light Infantry finished as sixth.
In the Women’s Open event, which lengthened 35 kilometres, W.K. Pushparani of Second Women’s Corps clinched the championship. Riders from the 6th Regiment, H.D. Sajeewani and N.S.P. Balasooriya finished at second and third respectively.

The 105-kilometre Standard Open event was claimed by Sarath Kumara of SLEME as Ordnance Corps privates Pushpa Kumara and W.D.C. Soysa completed the race at second and third respectively. The Over-40 event which ran through a course of 35 kilometres was won by Corporal Wickramathilake of Ordnance Corps. Armed Corps’ H.A. Amunukotuwa and A.P. Mayadunne of SLEME were placed second and third respectively.

Sinha Regiment’s B.P.I.R. Kumara won the 35-kilometre Disable Race as Armed Corps’ Udaya Shantha finished close behind at second. GHR’s W.P.S. Pushpakumara was placed third. 

The Over-55 event was won by Ex-Serviceman Saliya Weerakkody for the second successive year as veteran cyclist Anthony Symonds won the Over-60 Race. 71-year-old Symonds was placed overall seventh in the masters’ category which was won by Weerakkody. Others who finished from second to sixth are K.C.N. Perera, M.F. Jayalath, K.C. Perera, Ananda Ellapola and D.M. Kingsley respectively.

The annual Inter-Regimental Cycling Meet was conducted by the District Cycling Association of Anuradhapura, in collaboration with SLEME, the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cycling Federation and Sri Lanka Army Sports Control Board. Major General Boniface Perera, the Security HQ of Wanni Commandant was the chief guest at the awards ceremony. – NA
