The big scam
View(s):The big scam
At one time the game played with sticks was ear-marked to bring great honour to the country. Somehow over the years the game suffered and Sri Lanka was even beaten by Bangladesh. Officials tried hard to make the sport the number one in the country but failed in the process. Recently however a big tamasha took place at a five star hotel because Sri Lanka had triumphed at a neighbouring country and returned with a gold medal. On close scrutiny it has been unearthed that the contest was only second class. Big shots in the sports field attended the ‘do’ at the five star hotel to hail Sri Lanka’s victory were not aware of this. Now it boils down to a big scam!
The furniture deal
Sports fans were curious to know why some furniture was being removed from a leading sports body to a club in Havelock Park. It was speculated that a big wig in this sports circle also has a big say in the Havelock Park Club and he jumped at the opportunity to supply this club with some furniture as a good will gesture for giving him a top post in the said club. Even though the furniture is old it is quite valuable and could be used for quite some time. What the powerful can do!
Officials in a spot
Sports circles are wondering what action will be taken against officials who had submitted bogus certificates? It all arose when the sports body concerned asked officials to submit their sports credentials because they wanted to update their files. The officials concerned, most of them being over the hills, had submitted bogus certificates and that too being photo-copies. Now those in command want to see the originals, thus putting the officials in a spot.
Who is to be blamed?
A key tournament took place in Matara recently where ladies are concerned. But no proper ground bookings had been made. When the ladies went down south they had to play this major tournament at two venues. Fans of this sport that had come all the way from Colombo were shocked to see the contest being shifted from one venue to the other. The final was played at another venue where even a football match was in progress on the adjoining part of the ground. Because of this blunder the players had to suffer… while officials tried to cover it up. Who is to be blamed?
Battle of the Bosses
Recently a key tournament was kicked off at Baddegana with about 300 officials attending it. It was strange to see only five vice-presidents of the body being present on the occasion. Looking at the matter closely it was noted that some officials did not attend the official launching of the contest because of a grudge that they bear towards the present head of the sport and all of those who dodged the function were close friends of the previous boss.
