How do you get children to read? This question has vexed and continues to worry parents and teachers the world over.
Bringing some answers and more importantly some fun ways to interest kids in reading, was Belgian expert in young reader initiatives Dr. Gerard van der Weijden who conducted the Sunday Times workshop on ‘Newspapers in the Classroom’ for some 50 teachers in Galle on Thursday, October 24. The workshop was conducted in partnership with the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, Galle which generously hosted the session.

The workshop is part of the ST in Education initiative and is the

fourth in the series, two earlier being held in Colombo and one in Kandy also conducted by Dr. Weijden.

The teachers from Galle’s national and international schools enjoyed the fun-filled half-day session in the comfort of the Cinnamon Room at the Lighthouse Hotel with Dr. Weijden who soon had them cutting up the Sunday Times and creating their own front pages. He gave them valuable insights on how to get their young students interested in news and use newspapers as a practical tool in learning.

As one teacher said enthusiastically “It was very different from any workshop we have attended before”. The workshop was free of charge. Teachers interested in joining the newly launched Sunday Times Teachers Club could write in to: stteachersclub@gmail.com
