Attendants want probe into colleague’s dengue death
A section of the staff of the Colombo National Hospital is calling for a full investigation into the death of one their colleauges whose request for leave had been turned down while suffering from dengue and died as a result.
At least 40 staff members this week came to show their wrath when female attendant Deepika Priyadarshini Karaliyedda (28) of ward 30 died of dengue after she was not approved leave when she made an application.Earlier this week they held a protest in front of the hospital.
Speaking to the Sunday Times one of the attendants working in the ward said the death of her colleague was due to the negligence of the nursing staff. Notices were seen displayed in front of the ward as the minor staff and attendants blamed the senior officials for Deepika Priyadarshini’s death.
However doctors at the hospital did not approve of this action. Expressing their view, the nurses said the administration was responsible for the death as it failed to treat the attendant who was suffering from dengue. They said that she should have been admitted to the ICU for treatment.
Deepika Priyadarshini was treated at ward number 56 B but not admitted to the ICU when she fell severely ill. Colombo National Hospital Director Anil Jasinghe said he will issue a statement to the media after an inquiry into the incident as he was abroad when it took place.
