View(s):

The father who protested against the doctor who failed to perform a surgery on his pregnant wife which led to the death of the infant, was asked to appear before the Coroner to give his verdict. G. Dayananda Dias (42), a driver at a construction company in Malabe, said at the Coroner’s Courts in Colombo that he admitted his wife to the Castle Street Maternity Hospital on October 22. He said that the doctors informed him that the unborn baby was in good health.

However on Friday (25) the baby had died. He said that he got to know that the death occurred due to a delay by hospital staff who failed to follow the chief gynaecologist’s order. Later the Borella police arrested the father for verbally abusing the doctor who was to perform the surgery on his wife, and was released on bail last Sunday.

The post mortem was conducted by Dr. Ravindra Samaranayake of the Colombo National Hospital and the cause of death is yet to be determined. The Colombo City Coroner is to issue a statement on the death on November 27.
