The Animal Protection Trust is hoping that at least one of the following must be true for you:

A. You enjoy good food
B. You like looking at (and buying!) pretty and inventive things
C. You honour and have strong regard towards human and other forms of life

The Animal Protection Trust will host their annual Foods & Goods Sale on November 9 at the Dutch Burgher Union Hall. If you agree to any of the above, you should probably be there by 10 a.m, when they open doors.

The lovingly family-run English Cake Company will bring their favourite brownies and cupcakes as well as a wide range of their tarts and cakes to the sale. As they have made it a practice, Yohan Galapitage promises, there will be something new in their line-up for the event. And it seems wherever they go, they take the Panini with them. So if sweet is not your thing, then Panino will introduce you to your favourite quiche or create a life-changing sandwich for you.

With the food-art will be exhibited some of Henrietta “Chutson” Wickremasinghe’s own. Wickremasinghe is a traveller, and the pieces billed to be on show at the APT fundraiser are paintings and tapestries inspired by a recent visit to Thailand. Also at the sale will be Marina Perera, the hands and mind behind Zabozi jewellery. Perera will display a range of her collections of wooden accessories inspired by South African art forms.

From English tea, Italian sandwiches, African jewellery and Thai colours, the APT Foods and Goods sale comes closer to home with Lakro Industries and Neo Products. Lakro industries is all about conservation, be it environment, time or energy, and will display at the sale a range of fun and unique appliances/devices. among these are a wood/charcoal cooker, a coconut-oil powered scent diffuser modelled on the traditional dum-kabala and solar powered garden lighting systems. The Neo Products stall will feature their art and craft made with coconut shells and fibre.

The Animal Protection Trust (previously Sri Lanka Animal Protection Association) is a non-profit organisation that works towards animal welfare. They promote and organise sterilisation campaigns for cats and dogs island-wide, and are looking out for property in Gampaha, on which to begin a shelter for abandoned animals. They run a vet clinic and surgery, ‘Rainbow Pets’, geared towards providing affordable treatment for street animals, off Nawala Road in Nugegoda. And they are also in discussion with several government ministries to update the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Butcher’s Ordinance, while advocating for pet shop and breeder regulations.

It’s a Saturday, so do something good with it. Eat well, feast your eyes, get unique Christmas gifts for your loved ones, and help make some less-loved ones happy.
