Defending champs St. Peter’s begin campaign in style
Defending champions St. Peter’s Bambalapitiya began their campaign of the 2nd Murali Harmony Cup T20 cricket tournament in style with a 7-wicket win over last year’s runner up Jaffna Combined Schools at St. Patrick’s College ground in Jaffna.
St. Peter’s chasing a massive run chase of 201 runs was guided by two solid batting performances by Hashan Upendra who hit a blistering 77 in only 34 balls which comprised ten boundaries and four sixes and a 17 ball 58 inclusive of three boundaries and seven sixes.
The duo gave the side a flying start putting on a quick fire stand of 102 runs in just 38 balls helping them reach the target in the 15th over.
Kasun Weranga of Anuradhapura Central put in a swashbuckling batting performance in the other match played at the same ground where he slammed the first ton of the tournament when he made an unbeaten 107 in only 35 balls which included five boundaries and ten sixes.
Kasun’s innings saw Anuradhapura Central coast to a convincing 117 runs win over Mannar/Vavuniya Combined Schools. In the other matches played on day one at Kilinochchi and Oddusdan, Mulaitivu saw FOG Seenigama, Trinity, Dharmasoka MV Ambalangoda and St Sebastian’s Katuneriya securing wins.
The five day Murali Harmony Cup T20 cricket tournament is being contested by 12 teams with a Ladies tournament also being held concurrently.
