View(s):The Debarawewa National School’s Girls team emerged champions at the recently concluded “Sepak Takraw Nationals – 2013”, and two members of the team; both twins created history according to Hony Secretary of the Amateur Sepak Takraw Association, M. Jaldin as per information and facts provided by the President of the Association Nizam Hajireen.
Never before in the history of Sepak Takraw in Asia as well as in other continents where the game is played, have two raw young girls (Grade 10) have constructed, with assistance and encouragement from their parents, with their bare hands, uprooting and chopping trees, in the backyard of their house to construct the court.
Constantly during their construction they sought guidance and technical details from Zahiran Hajireen, the Chairman and Technical Committee of the Association.
To reward the efforts of these twins and to obtain first-hand information the President of the Association Nizam Hajireen, along with the panel of coaches visited Pannegamuwa, Weerawila, Tissamaharama on October 25 and 26 and declared open the court and conducted a two-day orientation programme of Sepak Takraw where a large number of girls from schools in the area were present and all of them were made aware of the impending “Women’s Sepaktakraw Championship- 2014” and to prepare themselves adequately to face the stiff challenges that they may encounter from India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh whose women teams are expected to participate.
The Association gifted, the net and balls to the girls to continue their regular training. The panel of coaches is scheduled to monitor their progress every month, to ensure that they are moulded into a winning outfit.
