Hollywood musicals at AC
View(s):Screening yesteryear Hollywood musicals American Centre (AC) will screen ‘The Music Man’ a 1962 musical film starring Robert Preston as Harold Hill and Shirley Jones as Marian Paroo at 6 pm on November 19. Based on the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name by Meredith Willson, the film centres around a con man who comes to a Midwestern town with a scam using a boy’s marching band programme, but things don’t go according to plan.
The film was one of the biggest hits of the year and highly acclaimed critically. Another American Technicolour musical comedy, ‘Anchors Aweigh’ directed by George Sidney and starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, and Gene Kelly will be screened at 6 pm on November 26.
Two sailors, one naive, the other experienced in the ways of the world, on liberty in Los Angeles, is the setting for this movie musical. In addition to a live-action Kelly dancing with Jerry the cartoon mouse, the movie also features José Iturbi, Pamela Britton, Dean Stockwell, and Sharon McManus.
