An eight year old girl, whose right foot was separated from the ankle in a motor bike accident, underwent a successful operation at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.  G. G. Dheduni Tamindi was returning home after tuition with both her mother and grand father on a motor bike when the accident occurred. As the child had fallen asleep her right foot got caught in the rear wheel of the bike. To the horror of the adults her foot was separated from the ankle and lay hanging.

She was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital while pieces of broken bones and torn flesh were brought in a polythene cover. Kidney and Vascular Transplant Specialist Ranjuka Ubesinghe who performed the surgery said, “The child’s foot was in a bad condition at the time of admission. But we managed to implant an iron frame to the bones and transplant the nerves. The blood circulation to her foot is better by now.”

“It is important when a person meets with an accident that any severed body part be brought in a clean polythene bag covered with ice cubes and water from outside.  Dr. Ubesinghe was assisted in the four hour surgery by Dr. Theja Jayasekara, Dr. Ishan Perera and Dr. Suranga.

Expressing her gratitude to the doctors Dheduni’s mother Sanjeewani Perera said, “We should be privileged to have such doctors in our country”.
