Post waste: Millions for luxury bungalows
View(s):The Postal Department has spent more than Rs. 300 million on construction of a VIP bungalow despite incurring a loss of more than Rs. 3.3 billion last year. According to the 2012 performance report, the revenue from operations was around Rs. 4.9 billion but the administrative and operational expenses were more than Rs. 8.2 billion.
Despite its dismal performance, the Postal Department has spent lavishly with Rs. 317 million being spent to build a VIP bungalow in Nuwara Eliya and several more millions on circuit bungalows.
The salaries and wages amounted to Rs 4.5 billion, while the overtime and holiday-pay allowances amounted to Rs 2.7 billion.
The Postal Department had also spent Rs. 900,000 to purchase 300 penholders for the Philatelic Bureau while getting 100,000 invitations printed for the Philatelic Exhibition of the World Post Day last year had cost the Department Rs. 750,000. The designing and preparations for the show had cost around Rs. 819, 000.
The preparations for stalls for the Deyata Kirula exhibition in 2012 had cost the Department Rs. 2.6 million while getting goods to holiday homes of the Department had cost Rs. 495,000.
