De La Rue to help revenue authorities to improve collection
De La Rue Solutions is discussing with the Inland Revenue and the Department of Excise to implement systems and procedures to close loopholes in payments in alcohol and tobacco industries, officials said.
“We are in touch with these authorities and we also discussed it with the Ministry of Finance,” Fergus Graham, Sales Director De La Rue told the Business Times. He was participating at the Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF).
Excise tax increases on tobacco and liquor is one of the popular mechanisms the Government resorts to in order to raise revenue at short notice. Last year, the excise duty hike on tobacco and related products came almost a month before the Budget 2013 was presented to the Parliament on 8 November 2013. Excise duty was increased for tobacco in cigars to Rs. 7,000 per kg from Rs. 5,500 per kg reported in March 2012. Mr. Graham said that De La Rue wants to explore the tax collection aspect in local authorities.
“We are 30 years in Sri Lanka,” he said, adding that in 2010, De La Rue Currency and Security Print Ltd opened its new and expanded currency printing facility at the Biyagama Free Trade Zone.
