Greek theatre at Kelaniya Campus
View(s):‘The Greek Theatre Festival at the University of Kelaniya -2013’ will present ‘Ada Wage Dawasaka Antigone’ based on Sophocle’s ‘Antigone’ on November 21, ‘Visekariyo’ based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata on November 22 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre Colombo. Both plays are being produced by Senior Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya, Priyankara Ratnayake.
Presented by Academic Players, theatre production group the main aim of the festival is to build a theatre for the students who does their higher studies in theatre and drama.
‘Visekariyo’ (Aristrophanes’ Lysistrata) is translated by Aruna Premaratne and ‘Ada Wage Dawasaka Antigani-A Day Like Today Antigone (Sophocle’s Antigone) is translated by Ariyawansa Ranaweera
Considered as the greatest comedy play in Greek theatre, ‘Lysistrata’ revolves around the women of Athens and Spata who started a protest against their husbands who were involved in an unending war. Frustrated by a long drawn out war which loses them their husbands and sons, women of both warring parties decide to start a sexual protest by refusing to sleep with their men.
‘Ada Wage Dawasaka Antigani-A Day Like Today Antigone is a musical play and is a story about a king who is maddened by excessive power. A play revolves around a conflict between the man’s law and the law of nature, Sophocle’s set ‘Antigone’ in a post-war period in Greek. Recovering from nearly three decades civil war, the play is timely and suits contemporary Sri Lankan society more than at any other time.
Starring Gihan Fernando, Thumindu Dodenthenna, Samadhi Laksiri, Prasadini Atapattu, Saman Malalasekara, Nilmini Wijesinghe, Nalin Lusena, Harshika Ratnayake and Vijitha Bandara, ‘Ada Wage Dawasaka Antigani’ is presented by Academic Players and the FLICT Institute.
