ESET launches mobile security app for Android
View(s):Slovakian computer antivirus company ESET recently launched its mobile security application (app) for the Android operating system in Sri Lanka.
This app, which has both a paid and a free version, enters Sri Lanka following its August 2013 worldwide unveiling.
Speaking at the launch, Shihan Annon, Director of DCS International, the sole agent for ESET in Sri Lanka, stated that “everybody who carries a smartphone is now a potential target”. He also revealed that there was a 146 per cent growth in terms of virus, worms and other types of attacks for Android operating system devices, and the fact that more than half of all new smart devices being purchased were android added further weight to the threat faced by smart device users. As such, Android-based smart devices were more likely to face malware and other threats going forward, even more so than when compared to any other mobile operating system platform.
Mr. Annon also noted that, nowadays, anybody can afford the hardware and software needed to attack a smart device, and even new technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC) were vulnerable via Bluetooth and WiFi attacks.
Commenting further on the ESET Mobile Security for Android app, Parvinder Walia, Marketing Director for ESET Asia, indicated that the features of this app included the Anti-Theft Wizard, SMS and Call Filtering, Security Audit, etc., which were geared to protect smart device users from a range of both simple and sophisticated security threats. These encompass protection against location tracking, access to contacts, phishing attacks, web-based attacks via malicious SMS, QR codes and URL links, etc. (JH)
