S.Thomas’ college old boys cricket 6’s
View(s):The Thomian Old Boys Cricket Sixes organized by the S. Thomas’ College – Mt. Lavinia “Class of 1990” was held for the 6th consecutive year on Saturday 9th November 2013 at the NCC, with the participation of 28 teams ranging from the Class of 76’ to the Class of 2009’.
It was a unique gathering of Thomians amongst its peers spanning over 2 generations, reminiscing about their time when they
attended the “school by the sea”. It was nice to see many Thomian Cricketing Legends including former and present Sri Lankan Cricketers like Mahinda Halangoda, Ranil Peiris, Kapila Wijegunewardene, Kaushik Amalean, Nisal Fernando, Jeewan Mendis and Kaushal Silva playing for their respective “class groups”.
The teams played for two different shields, namely the “Masters Trophy” for which the 08 most senior teams competed and the rest played for the “Class of 90 Challenge Trophy”.
At the end of the day after much competitive vigor and spirit, The Class of 88’ won the “Masters Trophy” beating Class of 81’ O/L by 4 runs in a keenly contested final. The Class of 89 (almost 25 years after leaving College) walked away with the “Class of 90’ Challenge Trophy” beating the Class of 2000.
The day was not all about cricket; it was much more than that. This event has always included good entertainment, papare bands, beer garden, good food, refreshments and even a kiddie’s corner. “STC Old boy’s batch cricket sixes” is now a “Red Letter” day in the Thomian calendar for the whole family.
After all that song and dance and yes, managing to play some competitive cricket, you still hear that favorite song linger in the air as the Thomians departed the NCC – “Back to STC happy land, happy land, I want to buy my ticket if I can”
