Soul sounds celebrate a decade of song
View(s):It was 10 years ago in 2004, when 20 girls just out of school and their choir director realized that they shared one passion…one love…music. Wanting to continue singing even after leaving school, they looked to their choir director for a solution. And thus saw the birth of Soul Sounds – a musical rollercoaster ride of a lifetime. The group is directed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, and its Artistic Director is Jerome L De Silva.
‘Soul Sounds’ marked the transition from a school girl choir to an award winning all-female ensemble. As a school choir, they were the first to represent the country at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eistedfodd in Wales in 2004 and were placed 1st runners up in the youth choir category, a distinction that no other choir has achieved at this competition to date. Since then, there has been no turning back. Having toured across four continents and winning 3 Golds and 2 Silvers at consecutive World Choir Games (2006 & ‘08), Soul Sounds has enthralled audiences around the world. The group has also recorded a single under the Universal Record Label “grief never grows old” for Tsunami Victims working with international record producer Mark Read, with artists such as Boy George, Cliff Richards, Russel Watson and many others.
A New Journey Begins
2014 ushers in a significant milestone in the history of the choir which will celebrate 10 years of being together as a group. To mark this occasion, the choir will have a series of concerts covering many genres of music from Classical to Jazz, Pop to Gospel and Local Music amongst others.
The first of these concerts will be Moods of Christmas which will be on the 22nd of December at the Cinnamon Grand. This concert is significant because the new identity of Soul Sounds was launched at this inaugural Christmas concert at the (then) Colombo Plaza, on 18th December 2004. To date the concert has been a sellout performances being an unique event to usher in the season in Colombo.
Following this will be a Gospel Concert with Prof. Mark Wilson on the 18th of January 2014 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. For more details please visit our website www.soulsounds.org or our Facebook page www.facebook.com/Soul.Sounds.SriLanka
