The Sports Law exists as a set of guidelines to maintain order and accountability among the country’s numerous sporting bodies, thereby helping their respective sports to flourish in a healthy and transparent atmosphere. But is this the case or is it providing more hindrance than help?

The Sports Law helps politicians come into the sport. It politicises things. Too much power should not be put in the hands of politicians because they have vested interests. Once they are in the sport they will bring in their stooges, - Amal Suriyage (Former Cycling Association official)

The Sports Laws will enable politicians to control sports bodies as they like. I don’t think that is a good thing for any sport. Local sports associations should be able to answer to the international bodies in charge of them. - M.S Azmi (Student)

The amendments of the Sports Law are to bring too many complications and it does not help the sport. With this law you can ask the question, what can’t you do? Anything is possible. Things must be left transparent and you cannot have loopholes. - Chinthaka Fernando (Badminton coach)

The Sports Law supports the country’s sports in general but there are some parts that need to be looked at. Various amendments are contradictory and do not give the sports bodies enough flexibility. Delon Fernando (Private sector employee)

The Sports Law helps sports and should be there but at the same time the heads of sports bodies should have some power. If there are wrong decisions made by the ministry, these bodies should have the power to appeal against them. - Isuru Perera (Private sector employee)

The Sports Law is just going to get in the way of the administration of sports bodies. These associations and federations should just b e left alone to look after themselves without interference. - Mario Cole (Private sector employee)

It has been unanimously agreed that the Sports Law hinders sports bodies. That is why it is being looked at again. Things got so bad that badminton officials went to the world body. - Preethi Perera (President of the Kayakking and Canoeing Association)

I think the Sports Law definitely helps the sport. Rules are needed to bring in order. If there weren’t any road rules vehicles would be driving everywhere. Similarly, we need the Sports Law to maintain some control, stop corruption and create transparency. - Ranjith Rodrigo (President of the Football Association)
