Kataragama OIC ordered to produce kapurala in Kandy Courts
View(s):Kandy Additional Magistrate Sesiri Herath issued notice on the Kataragama Police OIC through the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the District, directing the OIC to arrest the kapurala of the Sella Kataragama Gandadevi Kovil, Nimal Dissanayake and produce him in the Kandy Courts.
The Additional Magistrate also extended the warrant earlier issued for the arrest of the suspect Nimal Dissanayake.
Attorney-at-Law Mrs. Dhammika Ariyadasa submitted to Court that a warrant had been issued for this kapurala’s arrest, but this had not been done by the Kataragama Police.
The lawyer also submitted that the Kataragama OIC should have respected the Court order and produced him accordingly.
In this case the kapurala had obtained Rs. 650,000 from a member of the Maha Sangha by deceiving him and a complaint had been lodged with the Special Crimes Investigation Bureau of Kandy.
When the case was called earlier, the kapurala had promised to pay this money in instalments but had not done so.
On Friday (the calling date of the case), the accused kapurala had sent part of the money through a person who had stood surety for him when bail was granted earlier.
At this stage Ms. Ariyadasa drew the attention of Court that the kapurala had not been arrested though a warrant was pending and submitted that it should be issued to the Kataragama OIC through the Senior Superintendent of Police of the District.
The additional Magistrate Sesiri Herath re-issued the warrant and also ordered the Kataragama OIC to be present in Court when the case was called.
