UNPers approve vesting of powers in Leadership Council | Annual convention at Sirikotha
UNP members yesterday endorsed vesting of powers tn the newly appointed Leadership Council of the party at the UNP annual convention. The party said it will create a new mechanism to lead it to victory by preparing promotional and recruitment programmers required for a membership drive, initiating disciplinary action or administrative action in the event of the failure to follow directives and issuing orders and supervising the implementation of decisions taken by the Working Committee.
This was one of the four resolutions passed at the 55th party convention held at the UNP headquarter at Sirikotha presided over by Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The other resolutions included abolishing of the Executive Presidency. Under this the party hopes to introduce a resolution for a new constitution to restore People’s Rule through a Cabinet which is responsible to Parliament through a representative government and abolish the Executive Presidency.
The UNP said it will also work to end corruption and wastage and reduce the cost of living in the country. It said the drug menace has increased and the police are being brought under political influence. Through this resolution the UNP hopes to lessen the influences.
The UNP also will elect a government which provides relief to the public and support those who respect democracy and all people’s movements in order to elect a government which provides relief to the people.
Sajith too in favour of powers for LC
UNP MP Sajith Premadasa stood in favour of vesting the powers in the Leadership Council of the party when the members were called to declare whether they support the resolution or not.
All members at the convention cast their vote declaring their approval.
