Uprooted (Gamperaliya) By Martin Wickramasinghe

Uprooted the English translation of Gamperaliya, the first of the trilogy depicts the change in a rural southern hamlet under British rule. The pre-capitalist socio-economic structure was torn apart by the introduction of rudimental capitalist relations more suited to the interests of the British masters.

Gamperaliya depicts this changing village with the decay of the rural aristocracy symbolized by the Kaisaruwatte Walauwa and the emergence of an English educated middle class symbolized by the young school master Piyal. The landed gentry lose their power which is now wielded by the nascent trader class.
