Further digging of what is believed to be a mass grave at the Thirukethiswaran, Manthai junction in Mannar began yesterday in the presence of senior government officials. Construction workers attached to the Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) stumbled on 11 skeletal remains in a shallow grave on December 11 when they were digging the side of the road to instal a pipeline.

Under an order issued by the Mannar District Judge Anandi Kanagarathnam, the process of exhuming the remains began as more bodies are believed to be buried in the area.  Heavy machinery was brought into the area to assist in the work as a section of the tarred road had to be dug up to facilitate the unearthing.
